Air shelter, wine cellar
After work, some of us head to a restaurant in an ancient building just outside the old city centre. We drink a local halb Dunkel and eat schauefillet - a huge chunk of slow cooked pork shoulder with crackling, gravy, and a kloß potato dumpling.
One of our number knows the owner, who gives us a tour of the wine cellar after dinner. It was used as an air raid shelter during the war for 100 people. There are several shutters for passive ventilation (lüftung) as well as mechanical pumps for bringing air down.
Inspiring messages are inscribed on the wall in Germanic script:
- we’ll triumph in the end
- gossip is unpatriotic
