Russell
Some of my decisions on this holiday have been good, such as still going to Cape Farewell even though it was a long way and in the wrong direction. Some of my decisions were not so good, such as driving 20 km on a gravel road, partially collapsed into the sea to get to another lighthouse, this one needing a climb of 800 steps to get to the top.
My choice to visit Russell enroute to tonight's accomodation seemed to fall into the latter category when, quite a way down the road, we found we needed to catch a car ferry to get to the town. The fact the ferries ran every 15 minutes, the journey was short, they were roll on roll off and reasonably cheap improved the situation slightly.
I was totally vindicated when we got to Russell, a charming waterside town on the Bay of Islands. Everything was so laid back it was horizontal, it took us ages to order lunch because the waitress kept on talking to us about where we came from, where we are going and life the universe and everything. Fish Tacos when they arrived were delicious and the coffee, yet again, was good.
Rained all afternoon so drive was not too pleasant. The accomodation is literally on the beach.I am sitting on the covered veranda listening to the waves crashing in, it's the Tasman sea again, the crickets cricking and the rain on the roof. I was hoping for a sunset but it was not to be. So maybe tomorrow
