Love at first sight

My bird watching whats app group reported 16 or more Great Crested Grebes at Carr Mill Dam, at St Helen's near Liverpool. An unpromising location, it was actually a little jewel, and Sarah counted nearly 50 grebes mostly paired off and just starting on their answer to the dance of seven veils in their amazing courtship ritual. Meanwhile a friendly local bird watcher showed us the scarlet elfcap fungus in a fairy glade we would have easily missed under the leaves. And that cormorant better watch out - hated by fishermen they are on all those anglers" death lists - those that can't bear to share the planet with creatures who have as much right to be here as we humans.
