A notable viewpoint.

This stone pillar (which replaced a much older stone) is thought to mark the place where William Wallace stood and observed the approach of the English army from Linlithgow before the subsequent Battle of Falkirk on 22 July 1298. The Scots were defeated, many thousands were killed.

Wallace could have seen for miles from this viewpoint.

Nowadays the view across the Forth Valley is very different - it includes the three Bridges at Queensferry to the east, the carse of Falkirk (much developed), the Kelpies, the petrochemical industry and in the immediate foreground lots of local housing, the High School and Prison. Further away are the Wallace Monument (!) and Stirling Castle. Unchanged since Wallace’s day are the Forth Estuary, the Ochils, the Trossachs and Ben Lomond.
