If you can't beat them...

Sitta europaea

Nuthatches aren't  very common on our feeders.   Strangely we see them more than we see Starlings.  I am always pleased to see them when they do show up, because when I became interested in birds as a lad there weren't any as far north as Cumbria.

In the 88 - 91 Atlas there are very few records north of a line roughly Carlisle to Newcastle.  In the 07 - 11 Atlas they are almost everywhere south of a line Glasgow to Edinburgh with a few north up to just beyond the Black Isle.

I can't explain why this should happen apart from climate change.  The environment hasn't changed so much over the last 40 years or so that suddenly there are new ecological niches available, it can only be something as overarching as climate change.
