William at Kirby Muxloe Castle

Kirby Muxloe Castle is described by English Heritage as a "spectacular example of a late medieval quadrangular castle of the highest status."

William Hastings, who had profited considerably during the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century began construction in 1480 on the site of an earlier manor  house. Edward IV had given permission for him to crenellate the property. But Lord Hastings fell foul of Edward's successor, Richard III, and was beheaded in 1483. 

All that remains now is the shell of the 'castle' and the gatehouse surrounded by a moat. But it's a Grade I listed building with some rather marvellous brickwork.

It's a peaceful site. Not very big. I fancied bringing William for a walk here this morning rather than goggle boxing Justin on CBeebies. Will and I made a circuit before heading for Mummy Meet at Markfield.
