Spotted shags

Funny, ungainly looking birds in our eyes these Spotted Shags (Phalacrocorax punctatus) are perfectly put together by nature to survive on the sea diving deep for fish and squid, especially flounder.

These shags, or cormorants as they are called in the Northern Hemisphere are endemic to NZ and congregate on the cliffs and ledges of Tairoa Head. V-shaped chevrons of these birds flash overhead and rafts of them float out at sea congregating over fish and krill. Much like these.
