Unless of Course You are a Woodpecker
My bird feeder attracts a fair variety of wildlife and most seems happy to co-exist in order to get a winter feed. On a good day Long Tailed Tits, Woodpeckers and Blue Tits seem to get on well. The ground based birds such a Robins and Blackbirds are happy to peck around underneath the feeders where a good proportion of the nuts and seeds end up. Even the normally shy Jays play along with the game and seem tolerant of their winged counterparts.
The Red Squirrels are tolerated by most birds, unless of course you are a Woodpecker! When a Squirrel appears, then without fail the Woodpecker disappears.
Only 120,000 red squirrels remain in Scotland, around 75% of the total UK population, according to the Scottish Wildlife Trust. There are seemingly only 40,000 breeding pairs of Greater Spotted Woodpecker in the UK.
Guess the Woodpecker has good reason to be afraid.
