Little moments of warmth, brilliance and goodness

1. Today something happened in a wee church in Kirkcaldy that was exceptional. Maybe not in a big way, maybe not in everyone's terms, but today we did our first performance specifically designed to be 'autism friendly'.

2. It started at this meeting I talked about here. I remember how inspired I felt, how charged I was with possibility that we might do something really good.

3. So all this time later, we're here and it worked. It really, really worked. This photo shows a young man finding out how the production works before taking a seat in a theatre to watch a show that has been designed with him in mind. Re-plotted, re-rehearsed and made great.

4. It took a lot of people to make that happen - everyone involved in that show - took this idea and made it fly. They each played a part in changing something that may seem small on the outside, may seem trivial or slight. It may seem so, but really, it's huge.

5. That little moment of warmth, brilliance and goodness today, to me symbolises what the National Theatre of Scotland is perfectly. It's constant wave after wave of those moments. Some we see and others we don't. I believe that with all my heart and it makes my heart swell with pride.

(6. So when I read this four days before Vicky leaves the country after eight years living, working and creating here it makes me want to shout out, to scream and to rage in disbelief. Most of all what I would like is for these moments of xenophobia, parochialism and racism to end. Now. If Independence opens these gates, this is no Scotland I want anything to do with.)
