The Edge of the Wold

Blossom

I went to Leighton Moss this morning after breakfast. I counted 56 avocets on the Allen Pool, and there was a green-winged teal on the other side of the pool. From the Causeway I heard a bittern booming, there were numerous marsh harriers floating high above the reedbeds, and there was a female scaup on the water. I took photographs of most of these.

But better than all of those was a humble blue tit in amongst the blossom on our Amelanchier tree. We have a glorious week or 10 days each year when it flowers, and this year is more glorious than usual. Its next high point is in the early Summer when the little fruits are ripe and the blackbirds gorge themselves.

An earlyish post this evening, so we can have tea and take Gus for his evening walk on the estuary.
