The Edge of the Wold

Blossoming

Another day, another bird in another type of blossom. Here a female house sparrow is surrounded by blackthorn flowers, indeed she looks like she's doing her bit for pollination. The blackthorn has peaked this year in synchrony with the Amelanchier featured in yesterday's blip. There is a fragment of old blackthorn hedge in the lane outside our house that I have been trying to restore after it became overgrown and effectively strangled by ivy. This glory lasts for about two weeks, then later in the season there should be a crop of sloes to be picked after the first Autumn frosts.

It's been another bright, but cool day. We went visiting this afternoon, and I saw my first house martins of the year flying with swallows and sand martins over water near Brigsteer. The bluebells in the woods will soon be peaking, Spring is bowling along.

I have another blackthorn blossom blip to be back-blipped when there's an opportunity, this one with Gus in to appeal to Seascapes.
