Banana Memory

For years, Southampton held a proud association with the import of bananas to this country and for years what became known as the banana boats were regular visitors to the port.
Small wonder then that the Royal Southampton Yacht Club should look to a waterside bar and restaurant, aptly named Banana Wharf, as its latest pub of the month.
In its latest social events news bulletin to members it recalls that Southampton Docks has been synonymous with the banana trade since the 1880s when the famous Fyffes Company started to import bananas into the UK from the West Indies.
The Banana Wharf bar and restaurant in the city’s Ocean Village is a reminder of those times, and the Yacht Club recalls that the name was born from the history and heritage that surrounds the area. There are large decorative murals depicting the industry in full flow in the bar.
Yacht Club Members are planning to spend an evening there next week.
