A mini adventure
Today we took off for the Olympic Peninsula in gorgeous sunshine... we’ve been wanting to check out the Elwha River since the 2 dams were recently deconstructed ( 2014 for the 2nd one . The first was put there in 1910 to provide electricity for Port Angeles where we are spending the night. .)But the salmon making their way back to their spawning grounds up river were reduced from 400,000 to 3,000, causing all kinds of effects on other life.. See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elwha_Dam. For the story. However the road to see the sites of the former dam are closed due to wash outs... and one was too much for us to walk. We saw the river from the car on the bridge and an artistic descriptive kiosk ...It’s a happy success story. The salmon are returning in good numbers and the Elwha Native Americans are grateful.
Then we went to salt creek park on the shore of the straits of Juan de Fuca.... great views... no whales... but climbing on the rocks seemed too risky for me hence the blip and walk from above. A walk along the Port Angeles waterfront ( new since we’ve been there! ) was lovely ( new benches looking toward Canada, and a chat with 3 vizslas, extras, plus another view from Salt Creek Park. And we have another day here for more!
