If you can't beat them...

Sand Martins

We are on our way back down the Ashby canal so decided to moor near the Sand Martin Colony in the hope of getting shots.  When we arrived there wasn't a bird is sight.  Fortunately they turned up and I managed to get some shots of them in this unusual habitat.  Normally they nest in sandy river banks but seem to find these man made holes leading to soil acceptable.  Seeing them close up it is interesting to see the long wings characteristic of the Hirundines which spend much of their life on the wing.

An added bonus was the lovely woods beside the canal with their carpet of bluebells.  Clickychick and I had a wander in the woods and promised ourselves to nip back in the morning when the light would be better.
