Pioneer of Nursing

In a 13th century village church in Hampshire they’ll be commemorating the life of Florence Nightingale, famously regarded as the pioneer of modern nursing.
Family home for the social reformer who came to fame for her nursing work during the Crimean War, caring for wounded soldiers was in the Hampshire village of Wellow and there is a monument to her and her family in the grounds of the parish church of St Margaret’s.
By tradition villagers hold a commemoration service on the second Sunday of May - she was born in Florence, Italy, on May 12 in 1820, 199 years ago, although the family home was at Embley Park, on the outskirts of the village, and now a widely renowned school.
She died in London in August 1910 but is buried in the family grave by the church at Wellow. The memorial to the family bears only a short inscription relating to Florence - FN, born 12 May 1820, died 12 August 1910.
