Kitchener's Memorial
Kitchener of "Your Country Needs You" fame in WWI died along with most of the crew of HMS Hampshire when it sank in mysterious circumstances off Marwick Head, Orkney on 5 June 1916. The Orcadians have built a huge memorial to him and listed the 655 men who died. We had climbed the cliffs in seach of puffins but saw more on the Brough of Birsay which is fun to visit over a causeway at low tide and explore the viking ruins (900AD) extra. In the afternoon we walked on Birsay Moor- the hills are very gentle compared to the Lakes, and explored the Broch of Gurness (200BC) after the Heritage Scotland staff had left, so there was noone to tell us where not to walk (extra)
