My Alma Mater - Old Campus, Yale (not)
Ha! What a lark. We were woken shortly after going to sleep last night by quite a violet but short lived thunderstorm with lashings of rain drumming on the roof. This morning, you’d be hard pressed to notice that a considerable quantity of rain had fallen overnight.
Today, we drove from Ashaway RV resort in Rhode Island to New Haven (Connecticut) on the way to Interlake RV near Rhinebeck in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York.
The first 60 miles were a joy. And New Haven was very interesting, being as it is the home of Yale - hence my title. It also has a very good park: East Cliff Park which, as the name suggests has a cliff. It is, in fact, a crag and tail left over from the last glacial advance. We parked the RV and hiked to the top for magnificent views all around and a stunning monument to soldiers and sailors killed in the various wars in the 18th and 19th Centuries.
Once back down we walked along Orange Street, vis a coffee to New Haven Green in downtown. Called in at the visitors centre to see if we could pick up a walking tour of the main sights of Yale, which we duly did and visited Old Campus, the Stirling Memorial Library and the Cross Campus before picking up the free Yale Shuttle that dropped us back Near East Cliff.
The next 90 miles to Interlake were interesting to say the least. For the main, it was straightforward until we arrived at the junction for the Taconic Parkway for the final section only to find too late that it was a route for cars only. No trailers or campers! It appears the road becomes a dirt way after a few miles.
We were able to turn around and find a route up the 9, which was about 14 miles and 90 sets of traffic lights longer meaning that we arrived at the site at 9.00pm - just on dark! Not the best time to be driving a 33 foot RV through a forest, along narrow steep and twisty tracks to find our site, reverse into our pitch and connect everything up by which time it was pitch dark. Despite all, we felt good and enjoyed a well earned beer before a late dinner.
