End Of The Trial Of The Century

The 'political prisoner' trial in Spain of the Catalan independence leaders came to an end today. They face up to 25 years imprisonment for rebellion, which seems unlikely to be proven given an apparent lack of incitement to violence. Who knows what the sentence will be, when delivered in September or October, but it will define the course of the political debate in Spain.

The accused may get pardoned by the government, but that move has to await conviction. Probably this would be the best thing, and we must only hope that everyone has learned lessons from overstepping the legal mark, whatever the size of the over-step is eventually defined as.
