Crohy Head

We cycled on to Crohy Head, after stopping off at Don Byrne's bikeshop in Ardara for a new tyre. Don had been a maths teacher in a secondary school and took over the shop from his father when he died. (He had also been a Liverpool supporter since 1966.) We were in luck- there didn't seem to be any other bike shops until Letterkenny or Derry. We then stopped off at Eddie Doherty's shop,. Eddie is a Donegal weaver, and, would you believe another Liverpool supporter. Several of his family had been to University in Liverpool and one was now living there.

Our end destination was a house in the small settlement of Crohy on Crohy Head. Our hosts told us how her father was a fisherman working out of Killybegs- a week at sea followed by 2 nights at home. How he made the journey from Crohy Head to Killybegs in the past we could only imagine. It turned out that he had been taught maths by Don Byrne, now of the bike shop in Ardara, and that his son was presently being taught maths by Don Byrne's son.

(This cottage was the exception to the rule- most of the houses were relatively new bungalows. )
