Northern Wheatear

We're on the Vercors Massif, a high area 60-80 km south of Grenoble in the foothills of the French Alps, on a week-long  birding/butterfly/flower tour organized by Naturetrek, an English nature tour company, which we've gone with numerous times. Today we drove from our hotel to take a long walk over at least three hours, with considerable climbing. We found it tiring indeed. The area's topography is based on karst--essentially water-eroded sandstone, which you see vividly exposed in this image.  This northern wheatear is a female or juvenile, at the top of a rise 50 or more meters (150 feet).
