The Beehive.
In my primary school days The Beehive Inn was on my way to and from skool; at the back of the car park, to the side of the building, there were a couple of beehives. That was 30 years before I developed an interest in beekeeping so I don't remember whether they were occupied, I don't even remember their shape. I do remember that they were painted white so they were probably WBC hives which were developed by William Broughton Carr in 1890. The skep (which features in this blip) was still in use then but was being abandoned in favour of the modern moveable frame hives.
The WBC is still around, but is used mainly as a garden ornament. The problem is that it is a double walled hive so that you have to remove the outer shell to get at the hive itself before you could start work on the bees.
For pictures of unpainted WBC hives click here.
Incidentally, the "bees" buzzing around the entrance look more like wasps to me.
As you may have guessed, we have had wall to wall precipitation today so it was a quick dash out to find a blip followed by a quick dash back again.
