Sunday: Sandspit
We are in probably one of the remotest places we have ever been, Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands, but quite rightly now known again by its indigenous name). Haida Gwaii is in the northern part of British Columbia - an 8 hour ferry island from Prince Rupert on the mainland. That's to give you context because, that said, we flew from Vancouver to Sandspit, where we are spending our first night.
The flight on the twin turbo prop was straightforward, although incredibly empty. Sandspit is tiny (300 inhabitants) and when I tell you that we could walk from the airport to the hotel (and not in a massive airport hotel sort of way) that will give you a sense of the place.
Despite our early arrival, our room was ready so we dropped luggage and went for a good long walk around the spit - it made me wish I knew more about birds as we saw an incredible range. We got chatting to do a group of people who were conducting a storm petrel census - tomorrow they would carry on their research on the high seas.
If you stop sometimes to think of yourself as a dot on a landscape, it's pretty overwhelming to think of where that dot might find you.
There will be no wifi for a few days so I'll report back soon.
