Passport to Puglia #16
We’ve been here for over a fortnight now and have seen no cloud, nothing in the sky but wall to wall Pantone 2925.
Wonderful, but at a price...the temperatures have consistently been in the mid 30’s for days and we’re all starting to wilt.
There were rumours that today was the day for a break and suddenly, early evening, from the east, layers of ominous cloud began to roll in and we heard distant rumbles of thunder.
Then, everything was quiet, all the flying things fled, the lizards stopped lounging and as a blustery wind barrelled in over the valley I grabbed the pic you see above and we retreated to the shelter of the trullo to watch the storm grow.
In minutes we were enveloped in black cloud and a torrential icy rain storm.
All would have been fine if we hadn’t chosen that night to eat at one of the most celebrated restaurants in the province.
We set off for Ceglie with the storm still raging. WonderA got drenched just opening the gate at the head of the track.
We drove very slowly into town weaving around the floods and tumbleweed. Amazingly the local drivers had suddenly converted from wannabe Fangio’s into semi-sedate drivers for the evening, making the trip less stressful than normal.
Anyway, long story short, after paddling through the maze of alleys, we made it, bedraggled and steaming to the restaurant. Chef was surprised and delighted we’d made it through and a wonderful celebratory dinner was our reward.
