Earls Barton Saxon Church Tower
Back on 9th June I blipped the Saxon church at Brixworth in Northamptonshire. Today, on our journey home from our New Year stay with G's mum and dad, we took a short detour to Earls Barton a few miles east of Northampton. Here there is another fine example of Saxon church architecture.
In this case it is just the tower that is Saxon, dating from the late tenth century. It is thought that it was originally built as a turriform church, a style common in Anglo-Saxon times, where the tower was basically the whole church. The ground floor would have been used as the nave and there would have been just a small projecting chancel on the east side.
It was lovely to see it bathed in sunshine today. Perhaps the year has started as it means to continue. We can live in hope :-)
