Ready to Reap
I've been seeing a lot of combine harvesters around the last few days, but the field of wheat that I ride past on the way to the office is still standing. It's getting heavier and heavier, and I understand there's going to be a lot of rain over the weekend. I'm betting the farmer is probably wishing they'd got it in sooner!
I love the smell of ripe wheat, ready to harvest.
One of my first paid jobs as a teenager was running a small grain elevator on the ranch where we lived in Idaho. There was nothing worse than wet grain coming in from the fields, as it invariably clogged the leg (the chain of buckets that lifted the grain to the top of the elevator and into the distribution chutes).
