Fetlar: the Garden of Shetland
Today J & I set off early to catch the 07:40 bus from Lerwick up to Toft. From there we boarded the ferry to Yell where we were met by the bus to take us across Yell to the ferry at Gutcher From there another ferry first to Unst then to the island of Fetlar. There we were met by the Dial a Ride taxi we'd arranged yesterday. This took us to Houbie the main settlement on Fetlar. We had such a great time visiting the Fetlar Interpretative Centre, the cafe (excellent soup & homebakes) and walking to a beautiful beach. Then we walked the three or so miles back to the ferry to do the journey in reverse.
Fetlar is called the Garden of Shetland. It's green and fertile but only 60 people live there. There is one child in the primary school. We saw lots of birdlife, wild flowers and painted lady butterflies. The gannets put on a good show. It's been an adventure and a super day.
I'm blipping from the bus on my phone. Please excuse typos. The blip is looking back to Fetlar from the ferry to Yell. Once we get into Lerwick about 19:00 it'll be a quick freshen up before going out to eat then hitting the hay.
