Waimakariri River in flood
Some heavy rain in the mountains has caused the Waimakariri River to swell to impressive proportions. I am standing on the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge to take the photo, watching the water flow at about 1500 cubic metres per second (usually about 100 but can get as low as 40). It had been flowing even faster earlier. There is a huge roar as the water passes down the river.
