Sgwarnog: In the Field

Bridge

The east coast looked the best bet for avoiding the worst of the storms so I took an early train across to Hull and then a bus over the Bridge to Barton upon Humber where the Far Ings National Nature Reserve and FA Cup action at Barton Town FC awaited,

Walking out to Far Ings took me under the Humber Bridge and I can never resist a shot like this. For a view of the bridge from the reserve, see extras.

Conditions weren’t promising for butterflies, but there were occasional bright spells which brought some out in the sheltered meadow area that sits north of the lagoons. Lots of Painted Lady but also: Gatekeeper, Large, Small and Green- veined White, Common Blue, Speckled Wood, Red Admiral, Small Copper as well as Treble-bar and Silver Y moths. I’d been hoping for Essex Skipper but they may have finished for the year, if indeed they are to be found here. There were a few dragonflies about in the sheltered spots, the ones that I managed to photograph seem to be mainly Ruddy Darter (extra).

At the football Barton produced a minor act of giant killing, defeating Carlton Town from the league above by three goals to two.

Then, as I’d decided to make a weekend of it, a rare visit to a B&B.
