Bempton Cliffs
Sunday
We got a bit of a slow start today, as the breakfast service in the B&B was really slow this morning. They have a great choice of items available, including 4 or 5 fish dishes, such as kippers and smoked haddock, but it did sometimes seem to slow things down. Having packed up and checked out, we drove down the coast a bit to Bempton Cliffs. Whilst we did see a great number of birds, the experience was somewhat spoiled by swarms of bugs - tiny black insects that would just cover everything - I heard them referred to as Thunder bugs or corn beetles. One of the volunteers said, one of the local farmers had been harvesting his rape oil seed crop earlier in the week, and maybe this was the reason they had been around for the last day or so. Whenever I stayed still for a bit, my white cardigan would be covered, as would be our turquoise water bottle - they seemed particularly attracted to white and bright colours! Fortunately they didn’t bite or anything, but were extremely annoying. I think many of the puffins had left, though we did see a few. We had a cup of tea in the RSPB tea room about 3.15, before saying farewelÅ‚ to Peter and Judy, and going our separate ways. We arrived back at Janet and John’s at about 6.30. Bernard came down to join us for a bit of supper, then in the evening we watched a Johnny English film that Janet had recorded, thinking it would appeal to Roger’s sense of humor!
