The Spain, Petersfield

In the Middle Ages, The Spain was called Le Green. In Tudor times many houses had thatched roofs and only wealthy people had tiled roofs. The old word for tile is “ Spayne”, perhaps the name changed to The Spain because the houses there had tiled roofs.
