Seed head?

I saw this strange thing blowing around in the wind this morning when I was walking to Waitrose, it looked very interesting and I couldn't take it with me so put it by a garden wall to collect on my way home, which I did, fortunately still there.   It looks very attractive in a vase, but I have no idea what it is!   Does anyone know?
