St Petersburg Day 2

We were up and out straight after breakfast this morning for a trip to the Pavlovsk Palace. Getting there early was a good move and we had a fabulous guide who gave us an amazing amount of detail about the rooms, contents and gardens of the palace. The weather was great and the palace looked superb in the sunshine. One from inside in the extras. Given the state the palace was in after German occupation in WW2, an amazing job has been done.

Back into the city, we had a wander and then took a trip on the Metro system. It is very deep (see the escalator in the second extra), the station we joined at being 135m below ground due to it being soft marshland under the city. We went to visit the Tchaikovsky memorial and then out for some fairly traditional Russian food (well Annie and Rosie did).

Before getting back to rest tired feet at the hotel, there was time to visit a shop selling donuts and coffee in a retro Soviet era style. Amazingly cheap and apparently very tasty. The shop is so popular there have been queues out the door every time we’ve looked.
