Eye to eye

Another scorcher,  with temperatures hovering around 30C. I spent much of the day indoors, making short forays into the garden to cut back a few more sad looking perennials, or photograph some insects (which, apart from honey bees, were in short supply). While I was standing in the shade this common darter landed right next to me and sat on top of this broken rough horsetail for some time. Well, I couldn't look a gift dragonfly in the eye, could I?

All the family are back from their Bank Holiday shenanigans, so we're going to make the most of the fine weather by having a barbecue, perhaps the last of the year? Or maybe not. Who can tell any more?
