Upper carriage drive

I hoped to avoid the heat by walking to the moor this morning. I went by the lower carriage drive up to the higher one which gave me a shady woodland walk home.

They are known as carriage drives because Lord Armstrong used to bring his guests in their carriages from Cragside for a drive over the moor. Nowadays this area is still part of the Armstrong estate and not part of the National Trust managed site.

I’m reading Perfect Happiness by Penelope Lively. A relax before a week of childminding the boys.
