Day 6 Zadar to Šibenik 48 Really hot miles

Zadar to Šibenik . Our ferry landed at around 11pm and we found our way through the dock lands and the city of Zadar to our apartment. Zadar is much younger tourist visitor than any where else we have visited, I suppose also being a big city compared with rural towns. We grabbed a quick beer and did a load of washing making full use of the rinse and spin cycle on the washing machine.

Today we started by doing all the touristy things in Zadar. We walked up the tower (designed by a British architect) and got great views of the city. I was most impressed with the Church of st Donatus. I loved how they had reused bits of Roman stone to build it. You could see the Roman carvings jutting out, really good use of old stone. Mr PB called it a Roman junk yard.

Then we started the day’s ride. We were just out of Zadar and a cyclist - Jacob caught us up. He saw my Scottish flag and started chatting to us. He was 5 weeks into a world cycle tour. We both were in awe and very inspired by his youthful adventure ness. We waved him on and wished him luck. Then on to the very hot flattish ride. We refuelled at Lidl and dangled our feet in the sea to break up the journey. We deviated off the main road onto a lovely quiet route. I had got hot foot in both feet and legs, a cycling thing. They aren’t hot just sore. Because we set off late we cycled in the heat of the afternoon. Phew we were glad to get to Šibenik.

We didn’t have any expectations of Šibenik, but the old town is gorgeous. We cooked dinner and then headed into town. We wondered around the alleys and headed to St Michaels fort. The sun was setting and the light was beautiful, well worth the walk up the steps. Now sampling local beer in the old town.

Up early to ride in less hot weather.
