A long way to walk to anywhere...
When we woke this morning our three companions were gone from the campsite, and at the airport awaiting their flight home.
We decided to look at the nearby Reykjanes Peninsula. There is a National Park nearby with the same name but we never got there because there was too much to see on the way.
The famous Blue Lagoon is also in this area but we saw no signs of the large numbers of tourists headed that way. I guess the busses just stick to the main roads leading there from the Airport and from Reykjavik, and we were on the much smaller 425 from the airport to Grindavik, along the coast.
This picture, and the extra, shows the typical scenery we were driving, and sometimes walking, through. A huge lava plain, stretching from somewhere inland, and ending in high cliffs of lava.
When I took this picture, and the extra of the view in the other direction, showing the sea, we were walking from our van to a sea cliff filled with birds. Unfortunately this was the furthest we got because the path was deep in soft sand, very hard to walk through. When we reached this (not very high) high point and saw that we were maybe half-way there we gave up and headed back to the van!
Next time we'll reach that nearby National Park. We drove through it yesterday and it looked an interesting place
