rowan
We don't have any rowan trees in our garden, but two grow in the field just beyond our back gate. Celts called the rowan the Tree of Life and in Norse mythology, it was the tree from which the first woman was made (the first man was made from ash). Rowans were planted at the entrance to a dwelling to protect against evil spirits - read more about the folklore and uses of the tree HERE.
Today the berries were bright against the blue sky in the sudden sunlight which followed the rain. This September light is something to be savoured, as the days shorten and the swallows get ready to leave. I'm already thinking about the comfort of woolly socks, wood fires and hot water bottles, but trying to put all three off until the end of the month, or the equinox at least :-)
