Coal Drops Yard
I had wanted to explore the Kings Cross area when l was next in London and today provided the ideal opportunity. My husband and l met up with our son and headed to the Coal Drops Yard area for a coffee. We quickly avoided the expensive cafes and found a very reasonable one amongst the shops. Now fully charged we were free to explore this rather amazing development. Basically it’s a redevelopment of the old Victorian Coal Drops sheds that in the past received coal from South Yorkshire before transporting it on the nearby Regents Canal. It was designed by Thomas Heatherwick and completed in October 2018. Two nearby Gas Holders have also been converted into what appears to be apartments or offices. Fascinating as is Gas Holders Park but we didn’t have time to spare for many photos as we were heading to Camden Town via the canal. My husband wanted to find the flats where his father was brought up as a child as he had memories of visiting when young and looking out the window watching the trolley buses go by. We found the flats located above some shops and took some photos from the rear passageway. It’s surprising how much Camden Town has changed from when l last visited it, maybe 15 years ago. So much more touristy with lots of shops selling souvenirs.
It was then time for lunch and a wander around Regents Park before heading back to our daughter’s flat and a meal in a local Thai restaurant. A great day out.
