Leake Street
What an exciting day and we had lovely weather to. We met up with our son in Waterloo as we wanted to see his new accommodation and nearby workplace. I also wanted to have a walk around a few of the backstreets here as I worked for many years in this area over 30 years ago. I knew that there was an area of street art / graffiti in Leake Street but was most surprised to find that this was the short cut through a dark and dingy tunnel into Lower Marsh that I would often stroll along during lunch break. I took a few quick shots noting that there are even one or two businesses making use of the vaults and the one in the blip appears to be a bar that was just opening up for the day.
Our son seems to have good accommodation and it is only a short walk from his workplace. We then wandered all around the area crossing Southwark Bridge skirting around St Paul's Cathedral then over Millennium Bridge and along South Bank to Tower Bridge and then back to the Globe Theatre for an evening performance.
This was the reason why we were visiting London as the tickets were an early birthday present for my husband. We saw the performance 'Songs of the People' which had Michael Wood discussing the tradition and meaning of these protest songs through the ages while Steve Knightley performed a selection of the songs along with Adam Summerhayes and Kirsty Merryn. It was a great performance and I learnt a lot about how the songs tell of the times and struggles of ordinary people as they fought for the rights we have today. My husband thoroughly enjoyed himself. A great day out.
