News from the Western Front seems to be good, news from Poland is terrible. Warsaw is beleaguered, and the population - as well as the military - are fighting tooth and nail. I doubt there will be much hope there.

The Ministry of Information announced that the Government are making provision for the war to last three years. Three years! It is difficult to write what one must face up to - if that really represents the best we can hope for - without being theatrical about it.

But how many of us will be alive three years hence to see the end of this horror, if it does end then? What will there be remaining of all we knew and loved?
