Sunday September 10th
A black day, not because of any particular news, but (perhaps) because from being fine and warm, it suddenly became wet and colder. Autumn seems to be in the air. There were two gleams, however, one the saying of a child who was being evacuated, and the other a talk on “The tranquil mind” by dear old Walford Davies.
Someone asked the little refugee if she wasn’t frightened at being taken away from home and friends, to which the cherub replied “Oh no, it’s alright. The King knows”. I think he does.
Walford’s refuges were the same as mine - music and poetry, among other things especially, oddly enough “Jesu, Joy of man’s desiring”, which I played last Sunday morning to keep my courage up.
