Second day of the storm
I have to start from last night…
It certainly got scary at some point when the thunder finally after 10 hours at the sea started to hammer us. It was crazy. At the same time I’m seeing all these pictures of Santa Pole folding (we are it’s suburbia on the other side of the mountain of Santa Pola). Santa Pole definitely not being the only place flooding, but the closest. Then I get this text the Local police have asked to spread around. They needed help from citizens with SUV or 4 x 4 to help rescue people who were trapped in the water. At that point it got very real.
Fortunately (for us) the thunder passed south even if the rain continued. At 3 am we woke up because Nelson needed to pee. So as we noticed it wasn’t raining at that point Amadeus and Buddha got a little walk with my husband as they have hard time doing their business in our yard. Nelson on the other hand will pee inside without any trouble. Anyway we are all so glad that the rain had finally stopped.
Our official weather station uphill went off line so I couldn’t follow the rainfall yesterday. Today they returned for the morning so I saw that we got 140mm during the first day. I have my unofficial that said that down here we got around 300mm. Which is perfectly possible as it’s so local.
Worst area hit was Orihuela where they got over 400mm and as it’s coming down from the tall mountain to the ravins where the town is situated. It is catastrophe in many places. 3 people have died from being taken away with the water while being inside.
We did get rain today too. Best example today afternoon when the sun was shining and we decided to take a walk without the dogs. I put my day cream with SPF and we wore sunglasses. At 2 km from our house the thunder from the sea returned and we got soaked. (See picture.)
Anyway we were very lucky with this worst storm of the history of Spain. Some neighbours got their cars trapped in the flood water and some got leakage in the houses. But these were isolated incidents. There’s motorway sections underneath the water were people were saved with boats. So many people have lost their cars or their businesses have suffered damages or their homes. We lost electricity for few minutes and internet for few hours.
Also we were very lucky that the storm that was supposed to return today changed direction and went out to the sea heading to Balearic Islands. They said if it had retuned it would have been disaster on another level.
