Chicksands Priory

Through the summer months the friends of chicksands priory run guided tours. Very interesting, such an old building and so much history, not sure I took it all in, but it was well worth the visit to see all the restoration that has taken place. Plus all that is being done in the walled garden. It's a former monastic house which has been there since 1150, and has the only surviving remains of a Gilbertine cloister. It now sits on the campus of JFC Chicksands and is the Officers' Mess. Prior to this the USAF were stationed here (1950) and before that the RAF (1940). The USAF left in 1995 but in 1998 The Friends of Chicksands were asked to reopen the Priory to the public by the DISC commandant of the day.
As it is in the intelligence base, pictures from inside are not allowed, so just outside for my blip. But a couple of extras worth a look. One being the inner cloisters courtyard, which had a strange feel to it. Not overly large, but as it is all enclosed the air was heavy and a little bit eerie I thought.
