Northern Exposure

Dennis Head Old Beacon

This pic is maybe a bit unfair to North Ronaldsay as half an hour later the sky was blue and the rest of the day was sunny and fair, albeit windy. But it’s hard to resist the drama of this northernmost corner of the Orkney islands.

Two lighthouses within spitting distance of each other. One the tallest land based lighthouse in the British isles and the other, the old beacon dating from 1789. It’s wrapped in scaffolding at the moment, I’m not sure what the plans are.

Had a productive meeting and then spent the day wandering coastal paths following the sheep dyke, visiting bird hides, watching seals and staying well out of the way of the scary sheep. All very enjoyable and worth the ridiculously early start to catch the 7.35 flight.

I realised that I’ve been doing too many of the islander flights in the past week when the guy at the check in didn’t even ask my name.
