My dear friend Diarmuid Lawrence died today aged 72, too young. He directed the first show I ever produced ,Beggar Bride and we worked together, in different ways on many many other shows. The Echo, Silent Witness, Little Dorrit, Edwin Drood, South Riding, Mapp and Lucia etc etc. He was a brilliant story driven director, meticulous and inventive, punchy, loyal and great fun. He’d been ill and wrote a couple of weeks ago saying he had a heart op upcoming that was fifty fifty...even so I can’t believe he didn’t make it. Left a clutch of little grandkids he adored. Heartbreaking.
