The Rain Kept The Tourists Away

We woke to rain as predicted but not the thunderstorms that had been threatened, so after breakfast we headed out to explore the old part of Levanto. We ended up walking a short part of the hiking trail to Cinque Terre and had some stunning views back over town. We didn’t go too far as we weren’t really prepared and the path was getting slippery with the rain so we headed back down.

After a short walk along the beach we came to and decided to follow a walk/cycle route to the town to the north, Bonassola. It was a 2km walk through old railway tunnels (extra) and Bonassola turned out to be just as pretty as Levanto. After a drink in one of the beach cafes we hopped on the train back to Cinque Terre.

Today we planned to visit Monterosso, the first of the five villages and the biggest (extra). The rain was off and on and it wasn’t cold and luckily for us it seemed to keep the tourist numbers down. The sea was getting rough and the mists along the coast made it difficult to make out the other four villages from the harbour wall (main blip) as well as cancelling most of the ferries for the day...now I have quite good sea legs, but I don’t think I would have fancied it on a day like today.
