The Engels Stare

This statue of Engels was not welcome in the Ukraine after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and was sawn in half and dumped in a farm compound. It was rescued and now stands in Manchester.

Engels was sent by his father from Prussia to England to manage a family mill in Salford. He lived and worked in Salford and Manchester for 30 years. The young radical was shocked by the squalor and destitution he found . Here he wrote the seminal “The Condition of the Working Class in England”, and with Karl Marx (the two spent many hours in the library at Chethams) “The Communist Manifesto”.

I Would guess that gold was not Engels favourite colour.

I was in Manchester to give a presentation at a conference. I returned later with J to a concert at the Stoller Hall (extra). The Manchester Camerata with Gábor Takács-Nagy and Jean Efflam-Bavouzet. Part of the Made in Manchester all Mozart series. A tremendous evening.
