The Train Now Arriving

From when I was a kid, coming down to London from Cambridge for the day and joining the tube at King's Cross, I've always felt a slight thrill at the arrival of a train into an Underground station. There's the breeze along the platform, then the hum in the rails, then the glow of the train's lights far along the tunnel. All three build slowly from barely perceptible beginnings until suddenly, in a burst of windblown newspapers and squealing wheels, the space in front of you is full of train.

This is the moment of transition, at Goodge Street.
