Low Water beck, Boulder Valley

A successful ascent of Coniston Old Man. Rosemary’s first Lakeland fell and my 150th peak over 2000 feet.

To minimise the height gain for Rosemary we parked at the top of the Walna Scar taking the miners track from there joining with the tourist path from Coniston at Crowberry Haws then up through the old mines to the spectacular Low Water and finally up the steep headwall and south ridge to the summit.

Heavy rain at the start gave way to drier conditions and the route was largely sheltered from the strong westerlies by the Old Man’s bulk. Once on the summit ridge it was a different matter and we were battered by the wind which fortunately was largely at our backs.

We didn’t spend much time at the top, just stopping for the obligatory photos and a brief look around as the clouds lifted for a few moments to reveal Coniston water and the sea in the distance.

We followed the ridge northward to Levers Hawes descending down a steep slippery path to the tarn and along Boulder Valley back to the path junction and back along the miners track to the car.

The photo today is of Low Water beck as it tumbled out of Low Water yarn and on to join Levers Water beck.

A grand day out and a cause of much celebration all around.
