Bindibu Expedition, Day 6

Walampiri, on Willkinkara  (Lake Mackay) - a salt lake.

We gathered 'berries' from the samphire salt bushes today, growing near Lake Mackay. Our Aboriginal women guides then winnowed the seed, which was to be made into damper. There's a photo of them winnowing the seed.

We dug for witchetty grubs, and also for native onions, all of which were cooked and which we enjoyed eating.

Lunch was out on the immense landscape of Lake Mackay - I'm not sure if you'll be able to see some tiny figures way in the distance.

Later in the afternoon we said a sad farewell to our new friends. What a huge privilege to have met them and travelled with them. Such wonderful kind & caring people. They're an inspiration.
You could do a Google search for Pintubi Nine - it's fascinating stuff.

The last photo is one from our campfire. Those evenings around the campfires were special. The expedition leaders prepared & cooked all the meals, we helped where and when we could, and then cleaned up afterwards. Sleeping in our swags was really comfortable, and very welcome after the long days - and having been up since 5am!

From Wikipedia: The Pintupi Nine were a group of nine Pintupi people who lived a traditional hunter-gatherer desert-dwelling life in Australia's Gibson Desert until 1984, when they made contact with their relatives near Kiwirrkurra. They are sometimes also referred to as "the lost tribe".
